21 October, Webinar: Beyond the Bean - Creating Circular Value Along the Cocoa Value Chain

In this Cocoa Tertulia, Maria Franco from Berner Fachhochschule (BFH) will showcase findings from a Swiss–Ecuadorian study involving over 1,000 cocoa farmers and 23 stakeholders on circular bioeconomy opportunities for cocoa by-products.

The session explores:

  • How a circular bioeconomy can transform the cocoa sector—from pod husks to pulp, sweatings, and bean shells—turning waste into fertilisers, biochar, animal feed, beverages, nutraceuticals, and more.
  • What are the economic, environmental, and regulatory challenges for biowaste valorisation?
  • How innovative biowaste valorisation can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 33%, diversify farmer incomes, and create new industrial niches aligned with sustainability goals.

This event is aimed at:

  • Professionals interested in scaling cocoa by-product valorisation
  • Policymakers, NGOs, and researchers seeking practical frameworks for advancing the circular bioeconomy in cocoa
